Ruben Ochoa

Thursday, Mar 25, 2010 to Saturday, Jun 19, 2010

Los Angeles-based artist Ruben Ochoa creates ambitious sculptural installations that radically intervene into the existing built environment using common construction materials in unusual ways. His sculpture, photography, and public interventions move beyond their formal references to civil engineering in order to critique the associations of architectural boundaries with class restrictions cultural and ethnic margins.

Ochoa, who is part of a generation of Mexican-American artists who are exploring cultural politics through conceptual art practices, has been commissioned by MCASD to create a new site-specific piece in the Farrell Gallery of MCASD Downtown\\\\\\'s Jacobs Building. This is his largest commission to date and the artwork Ochoa creates promises to test the limits of this expansive gallery space. The work is anticipated to explore the tension between architecture and the social environment, and challenge the relationships between the natural and the unnatural, and the real and the illusory.

Ruben Ochoa is curated by MCASD Associate Curator Lucía Sanromán.
