The Reflections Showcase represents the collaborative efforts of over 130 adult participants hailing from Chula Vista to Del Mar. Every Friday morning from May 2023 to July 2024, participants joined MCASD’s Educators to tour artworks in the galleries, have lively discussions, and create pieces inspired by the exhibited works. Guided by Museum educators Kelley Katan, Frankie Martin, and Kim Cando, they created artworks inspired by MCASD's permanent collection and special exhibitions.

Throughout six different themed series, these artists, aged 55 and better, were empowered with newfound knowledge and inspiration, and produced artworks that reflect their distinct interest and unique identities. Throughout these individual and collective pieces, we see artists from diverse backgrounds and experiences creating community and enjoying the benefits of art and lifelong learning as we grow into ourselves.

Participants were invited to submit artwork from any of the series or sessions they attended:

  • Series 1: Storytelling and autobiographical work, culminating with a handmade book
  • Series 2: Portraiture using a variety of techniques
  • Series 3: Representations of the body using a variety of media
  • Series 4: Contemporary fiber arts
  • Series 5: Paper arts and bookbinding
  • Series 6: Interweaving tech and art, utilizing watercolors and creating digital drawings using the ProCreate app on iPads provided by MCASD

Showcase dates are open to the public during our gallery hours, Thursday to Saturday from 11AM – 7PM and Sunday from 11AM – 5PM.
