Heroes and Monsters (Ages 6 – 7)

July 7 – 11, 8:30AM – 3PM

What would your artful superpower be?

Get ready to team up with your friends and MCASD educators in an awesome showdown for the fate of the museum–an art collision between Heroes and Monsters. Spend the week designing your own Hero and Monster inspired by the Museum's collection:

  • Learn how to use art for good by developing your own art superpowers.
  • Create a persona by dawning masks and capes influenced by Nick Cave.
  • Use John Baldessari's conceptual powers to fight "Boring Art."

Schedule

  • Day 1: Start the week by imagining your superhero, or good-monster alter-ego, and its artful superpowers! Then, create your helmet.
  • Day 2: Make your shield and cape and create dice to guide your way.
  • Spend the rest of the week creating instruments and tools that help build a superhero, art-filled universe filled with magic and spells of your making!

Material Land Escapades (Ages 7 – 9)

July 14 – 18, 8:30AM – 3PM

Want to come on an adventure on land, sea, and into space?

Make new friends as you go on an adventure of colorful landscapes and radiant underwater worlds at MCASD! Learn how contemporary artists combine mediums and materials and make art inspired by the natural world around us:

  • Create your very own underwater world inspired by Andrea Chung.
  • Team up with other camps to film and build an installation just like Fox Maxy.
  • Bend light to create mysterious wonders to celebrate Robert Irwin.

Schedule

  • Day 1: Create moon maps and planet keychains as you learn about the moon and space inspired on the works from the permanent collection.
  • Day 2: Finds yourself back on earth surrounded by nature, as you make dancing tree murals and find your way out of escape rooms.
  • Spend the rest of the week exploring the sea and its textures, creating ponchos and totems while also working a book to share your adventures.

Installation Exploration: Transforming Space Through Art (Ages 7 – 9)

July 21 – 25, 8:30AM – 3PM

Transform space, embody art, and leave your creative mark during this week of creative transformation. Explore the world of installation and performance art as you experiment with scale, collaboration, and innovation:

  • Together, create a large-scale sculpture inspired by artists in the Museum’s collection.
  • Dive into immersive video and sound installations using iPads, taking cues from the works of Sterling Ruby, Ed Ruscha, and Fox Maxy.
  • Create wearable art and puppets inspired by Nick Cave and Mickalene Thomas, culminating in a collaborative performance piece.

Schedule

  • Day 1: Begin transforming the space around! Create puppets that either dangle from a string or become part of your hand and move in the space, while imagining their personality.
  • Use digital and mixed media materials to create sculptures that will become part of your collective installation.
  • Integrate images and sounds and create a wearable sculpture, as you combine all the elements into an installation and performance piece to share with parents!
