Reflections is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. In this new 8-week art series, explore the bold, dynamic world of Pop Art!

Drawing inspiration from global artworks in MCASD’s new exhibition, An Artful Life: A Tribute to Matthew C. Strauss, and our own permanent collection, we will explore iconic artists like Nick Cave, Beatriz Milhazes, Mikalene Thomas, and Sigmar Polke.

Discover the global pulse of Pop through 4 unique, hands-on projects that blend text, vibrant visuals, and playful experimentation. Create 2D artworks utilizing techniques like layering, stencils, and image transfer and 3D wearable works.

Whether you're a beginner or experienced, these workshops offer a fun and supportive space to explore new creative possibilities! Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary art-making techniques and materials. No prior art experience is required. Registration gives participants access to the full series (eight workshops).

Weekly Program

March 21 & March 28: Collaged, Bedazzled, and Hidden

Drawing inspiration from Mickalene Thomas’ captivating paintings and Beatriz Milhazes's dynamic canvases, this two-part workshop focuses on developing a vibrant, 2D collage with hidden elements and sparkling details. Using rhinestones, magazines, and a variety of other dazzling materials, participants will create layered figurative works that uncover and embellish hidden narratives, resulting in visually compelling and conceptually rich works.

April 4 & April 11: 2D Text-Based Art

Explore how text can communicate meaning through texture, color, and form. Inspired by the striking text-based paintings of Ed Ruscha and Lari Pittman, this two-part workshop focuses on creating bold, 2D text-based works on paper. Participants will experiment with stencils and a variety of drawing materials, such as oil pastels and colored pencils.

April 18 & April 25: Layers and Image Transfer

Capture the essence of artistic experimentation. Explore the innovative techniques of vibrant layering and image transfer in this two-part workshop inspired by the groundbreaking work of Sigmar Polke and Robert Rauschenberg. Using watercolor, photo transfer techniques, and collagraph, participants will produce textured, multi-dimensional artwork.

May 2 & May 9: The Figure in Pop – Wearable Art

Dive into the world of wearable art in this two-part workshop inspired by iconic artists Nick Cave and Sadie Benning! Participants will create bold, pop-inspired pieces—cuffs, necklaces, and headpieces—using polymer clay, felt, wire, and more. Through these materials, students will construct unique wearable sculptures that challenge the boundaries of personal expression and fashion. Join us in crafting one-of-a-kind wearable artworks that celebrate creativity and individuality.
