Play Day: Gleaming Lights
Join us on Free Second Sunday for Play Day!
Celebrate the legacy of long-time San Diego resident Robert Irwin, who created innovative site-specific artworks that explore the effects of light through interventions in space and architecture.
Taking inspiration from Irwin's use of light, we will play with its natural and artificial sources by casting shadows in a shadow puppet theater and learning the differences between translucent, transparent, and opaque objects.
Art activity: Inspired by the radiant glass sculpture Spanish Fan (1995), on view in MCASD’s Sculpture Garden, create a faux-stained glass rainbow with colored cellophane paper and hang them on your favorite window in Prebys Learning Center.
Schedule:
- At 10AM, explore our galleries with a kid friendly tour
- At 12:30PM, listen to stories, songs, and rhymes in Storytime with Ms. Katia, Librarian On the Go.
- From 10AM-1PM, enjoy music, a book nook, and free play on McGrath Terrace. In Jacobs Hall, play with light and shadows with fun, interactive activities.
*Museum admission is free from 10AM – 4PM for all visitors, with Play Day offerings happening between 10AM – 1PM.

Únete a nosotros este domingo 12 de marzo para celebrar el legado de Robert Irwin, residente en San Diego desde hace mucho tiempo.
Irwin creó innovadoras obras de arte para lugares específicos que exploran los efectos de la luz a través de intervenciones en el espacio y la arquitectura.
Inspirándonos en la radiante escultura de vidrio Abanico español, expuesta en el jardín de esculturas de MCASD, crearemos un arco iris de vidrio falso con papel celofán de colores que atrapará y hará brillar la luz de tu ventana favorita.
La forma en que Robert Irwin usó la luz nos servirá de inspiración para jugar con fuentes de luz naturales y artificiales. Nos invitará a experimentar proyectando sombras en un teatro de marionetas y a aprender la diferencia entre objetos translúcidos, transparentes y opacos.
- 10:00 a.m.-1 p.m.- Crear libros hechos a mano con materiales de la naturaleza en Prebys con educadores MCASD
- 10:00 a.m.-1 p.m.- Música a cargo de un DJ local, book nook y juego libre en McGrath Terrace
- 10:00 a.m.- Explora nuestras galerías con un tour "Kid-Friendly".
- 12:30 p.m. - Escucha cuentos, canciones y rimas en la Hora del Cuento con la bibliotecaria Sra. Katia Graham.
La entrada al museo es gratuita de 10:00 a 16:00 para todos los visitantes, y los Días de Juego se ofrecen entre las 10:00 y las 13:00 horas.
