"You are Invited" is a hands-on printmaking workshop led by artist Isa Ybarra, whose work is featured in the exhibition Visiones Nocturnas. Taking up the exhibition's themes of nocturnal gatherings, dance floors, and the communities that form after dark, the workshop highlights flyers as a form of printed ephemera: a small, reproducible object that circulates through hands, walls, and pockets to call a scene into being.

Drawing on Ybarra's approach to printmaking, participants will carve their own linoleum blocks and combine them with lino stamps brought by Ybarra, layering image, type, and pattern to design an invitation to a night of their own imagining. Along the way, participants will explore how the printed multiple has long served as a tool for making community visible.

No printmaking experience is needed, only a willingness to imagine the party. Participants will leave with a set of original handmade flyers and a new set of printmaking skills to carry into their own creative practice.

About

Isa Ybarra is a mixed media painter and printmaker based in San Diego. Drawing on Mexican/Chicanx muralism, skate culture, tattooing, and zine ephemera and informed by activism and DIY in their local communities, Ybarra uses imagery such as lowriders, machetes, and vaqueros to celebrate Chicanx pride while critiquing colonial and machismo systems. Their paintings challenge borders, unraveling the tension between gender fluidity and Chicanx identity while centering queer Latinx visibility and joy as resistance.
