Deadline to Apply for the MCASD Shared Spaces Initiative set for November 21
San Diego – October 23, 2025 - The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCASD) is one of 61 San Diego arts and culture organizations to be awarded a Prebys Foundation grant designed to help protect San Diego’s vibrant arts scene from federal and state funding cuts, local budget shortfalls, donor fatigue and inflation.
“The arts are essential infrastructure for a thriving, equitable, and prosperous region,” said Prebys Foundation CEO Grant Oliphant. “When we invest in the arts, we invest in jobs, innovation, understanding, and the shared spaces where our community’s stories and healing come alive.”
The $200,000 grant to MCASD will support a new program called the MCASD Shared Spaces Initiative that invites San Diego non-profit arts organizations to apply to use various Museum spaces for their workshops, trainings, meetings, fundraisers, screenings, performances, exhibitions, and other programming. The program goals are to enhance access to quality venues and spaces and help build the capacity of the arts and culture organizations activating these spaces.
MCASD will waive rental fees and cover costs for event staff, security, cleaning services, and basic AV equipment. Organizations remain responsible for all direct program costs including artist fees, travel, honoraria, supplies, materials, food, beverages, additional AV/lighting equipment, and supplementary services such as extended hours, extra staffing, or gallery activations.
“We are grateful to the Prebys Foundation for providing this opportunity to share our extraordinary venue with the community,” said Kathryn Kanjo, The David C. Copley Director and CEO. “The inspiring backdrop of contemporary art and architecture, oceanside location, and creative innovation will elevate community events, attract new audiences for both our partner organizations and the Museum, build bridges between the region’s diverse neighborhoods and support San Diego’s cultural economy.”
Applications will be reviewed and selected by MCASD Team members who develop and produce events and programming at MCASD. Due to capacity, participation is limited to approximately 15 organizations.
