Presented in partnership with the San Diego Museum of Art, the 2024 Axline Lecture features Daniel Lind-Ramos (b. 1953), a sculptor and painter whose monumental works channel the history of Caribbean culture and investigate the use of everyday found objects.
Lind-Ramos' artwork is included in MCASD's upcoming exhibition, Forecast Form: Art in the Caribbean Diaspora, 1990s–Today, on view from April 18, 2024, to July 28, 2024.
***The lecture will be in Spanish, with live Spanish-to-English translation available via headsets at no extra cost. Headsets will be available on a first come-first serve basis in Jacobs Hall. We highly recommend arriving early to secure a headset.***

Daniel Lind-Ramos was born in Loíza, Puerto Rico in 1953. He studied at the University of Puerto Rico: BA. (1975), New York University: MA. (1979).

Lind-Ramos has received the McArthur Foundation's Genius Fellowship Award 2021, USA Artist Fellowship Award 2021, Artsy Vanguard 2020, African's Out-Joan Mitchell African residency, the Joan Mitchell scholarship, the Pérez Museum Prize, the Nada Artadia Award.
As an accomplished curator, writer and art project manager, Jess Berlanga Taylor has curated numerous exhibits and commissioned more than 40 works of art, 11 of which were created for public spaces in Mexico City. As a bicultural and bilingual art professional, Berlanga Taylor has focused on projects specific to historical and notable locations, as well as socially engaged art. She has led the design and implementation of education projects, seminars and workshops for a wide array of audiences including students and emerging artists. Berlanga Taylor has published 3 books, over 100 articles, essays, catalogs and magazine reviews and a comprehensive survey of 20 years of contemporary art in Mexico.
As Director of the Stuart Collection at UC San Diego, Jess Berlanga Taylor holds a highly visible leadership position in public art on campus, locally, nationally and internationally. She develops and directs public relations, educational outreach and public service programming that promotes the Stuart Collection, creates deeper appreciation for UC San Diego and advances the understanding of art and cultures in the context of broader international conversations. She also works with the Stuart Collection International Advisory Board and collaborates with other arts leaders on campus, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing equity, diversity and inclusion.
Since 2000, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and The San Diego Museum of Art have partnered to present a distinguished member of the art world to speak to our shared audience through The Axline Lecture. Axline lectures feature leading cultural thinkers, scholars, architects, and artists. Recent speakers include former museum director Philip de Montebello and art historian Dr. John Richardson, Ana de Avelar, Trevor Paglen, Annabelle Selldorf, Narcy Laurence, Cathy Opie, Sebastião Salgado, El Anatsui, William Kentridge, Maya Lin, Charles Ray, June Edmonds, Sergio Hernandez and others.
