THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART SAN DIEGO OPENS PHENOMENAL EXHIBITION IN SEPTEMBER 2011

Exhibition and Publication are the Largest Project in MCASD History, Part of Getty-Funded Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980

San Diego, CA—On September 25, 2011, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego will open its most ambitious exhibition to date. Phenomenal: California Light, Space, Surface takes an in-depth look at 13 artists working in Los Angeles in the 1960s and ‘70s whose perceptual investigations and work with light and innovative materialshelped define an era of art making in California.

Two New Exhibitions Open May 28 at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

High Fidelity to Honor Trustee and Arts Patron Murray A. Gribin

San Diego, CA- On Saturday, May 28, MCASD will open two new exhibitions at its La Jolla location. High Fidelity: Selections from the 1960s and 1970s and Emperor’s River: Philipp Scholz Rittermann will be on view through September 5, 2011.

The opening celebration for both exhibitions will be held on Friday, May 27, and related programs will be held in conjunction with the exhibitions, beginning with a talk by celebrated Los Angeles artist Alexis Smith on June 9.

MCASD KICKED OFF 24-HOUR PROTEST THIS MORNING

Community Members, Artists, Staff Participate in Sit-In at Museum's Downtown Location

San Diego, CA—A 24-hour protest to call for the release of detained Chinese artist Ai Weiwei began at 11 AM today at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s downtown location. 

Local artist Wes Bruce and MCASD staffer Tim Bruehl occupied the first of 24 shifts that will make up the Museum’s demonstration. The roster of participants includes artists, students, journalists, staff, and others who were compelled to support Ai Weiwei as part of this silent yet symbolic event.

COLLECTORS GROUP ACQUIRES NEW WORKS FOR MCASD

Works Voted on at Annual Selection Dinner, Featured in Prospect 2011 at MCASD Downtown

San Diego, CA—At the 2011 Collectors’ Selection Dinner on Wednesday, May 11, MCASD’s International Collectors and Contemporary Collectors voted to purchase new works for the Museum's collection: two examples of Ai Weiwei’s famous Marble Chair (2010); an exuberant draped canvas by Sam Gilliam, Dance Me, Dance You 2 #1 (2009); and a rare polished resin sphere by Helen Pashgian, Untitled (1968/69).

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART OFFERS FREE ADMISSION YEAR-ROUND TO MILITARY PERSONNEL AND THEIR FAMILIES

San Diego, CAWith more than 300,000 military personnel and family members living in San Diego County, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is committing to serving families of service men and women by offering them free year-round admission.

“Our community has thousands of military families, and this is just one way our institution can thank them for all they do,”said Davies. “Art should be accessible. We want to provide a place where these families can connect with the art and spend quality time together, at no cost to them.”

MCASD CALLS FOR THE RELEASE OF AI WEIWEI

San Diego, CA--On April 3, 2011 Chinese authorities arrested internationally acclaimed artist Ai Weiwei at the Beijing airport as he was preparing to board a flight to Hong Kong.  His papers and computers were seized from his studio compound. Last weekend, protests were held at the Chinese embassy in Los Angeles and New York calling for the release of this revolutionary artist.
