Join us a Reflections series inspired by MCASD's newest exhibition Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys! In these 4 weeks of artmaking, create layered fabric collages and mixed-media round canvases using wire threads and glimmer-y elements.
The first two sessions explore the textured compositions of Derrick Adams's Floater 74 (2018) and Tschabalala Self's Blonde (2019) as we create collages. For our second project, we will look at Nick Cave's Tondo (2018) and Soundsuit (2016) and Mickalene Thomas' Le déjeuner sur l'herbe: les trois femmes noires (2010), learning about their use of color and materials.

Reflections is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. Whether you're a beginner or experienced, these workshops offer a fun and supportive space to explore new creative possibilities!
Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary art-making techniques and materials. No prior art experience is required. Registration gives participants access to the full series (four workshops).
Session dates in this series are:
10AM: Gallery Discussion
The conversations around the artworks in MCASD’s collection will offer stimulating input and prompts for participants as they think about creating their own artworks.
10:30AM: Coffee and Mingle
Refreshments and time for social interaction will take place in Museum venues that take full advantage of the beautiful oceanside location and views.
11AM: Art-Making Activity
The hands-on workshop will provide a forum for self-expression and developing new interpersonal connections.
Week 1— Textures & Figures
Tour and discuss Derrick Adams's Floater 74 (2018) and Tschabalala Self's Blonde (2019). Taking inspiration from these artworks, we will begin our first project: a layered fabric collage portrait.
Week 2 — Finishing Touches
We will continue working on our fabric collage portraits, refining details and adding finishing touches.
Week 3 — Into the Round
Tour and discuss Nick Cave's Soundsuit (2016) and Tondo (2018) and Mickalene Thomas' Le déjeuner sur l'herbe: les trois femmes noires (2010). Taking inspiration from these artworks, we will begin our own mixed-media projects on round canvases.
Week 4 — Layers & Luster
Continue building our mixed-media round canvases, adding layers of buttons, rhinestones, and wire. We will apply our final details and then come together as a group to discuss our finished works.
