“Visiones Nocturnas: Queer Nightlife in Contemporary Art” will highlight the experiences of Latina/o/e and Latin American artists across generations and borders. On view September 19, 2026 – January 10, 2027. 

San Diego, CA - July 20, 2026 — The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego announces their fall exhibition Visiones Nocturnas: Queer Nightlife in Contemporary Art, opening to the public on Saturday, September 19, which explores the intersection of queer nightlife and contemporary art through works that explore physicality of these spaces—dance clubs, dive bars, backyards and bathhouses—as criticalsites of queer collectivity, transcendence, and resilience. Anchored by the writings of Tijuana-based scholar Sayak Valencia’s notion of “cuir,” a queer sensibility rooted in the Spanish language, and José Esteban Muñoz’s assertion of “queer horizons,” which considers the relationship between memory and futurity, this exhibition highlights the work of Latina/o/e and Latin American artists from the 1990s to today.  

Visiones Nocturnas, or night visions, borrows its title from the work of Andres Payan Estrada, whose project commemorates a decade of photographic research examining facets of queer nightlife along the U.S./Mexico border. This immersive installation has recently been shown in spaces along the border from Texas to Tijuana, but this exhibition marks its first museum debut. MCASD’s presentation will feature a recent expansion of the work highlighting nightlife space in San Diego. Drawing on this notion of ‘night vision,’ or the interplay between darkness and visibility, a section of the exhibition examines how artists have sought to archive, preserve, and remember lost queer spaces as many of them continue to close.  

“I think of nightlife as a living archive. I'm interested in how places shape us long after we've left them,” said Andres Payan Estrada. “Every dance floor and nightlife space carry stories of friendship, desire, movement, grief, resistance, and joy. These are spaces where communities create and transmit forms of belonging that extend well beyond the night itself.” 

Continuing in this vein, another section of the exhibition highlights how queer diasporic communities have used movement and dance to enact sites of cultural resilience and belonging. The final sectionexplores the nightclub as form, where artists probe the physical trappings of these environments—disco balls, lights, curtains and dancefloors—as indexes for queer kinship. 

Visiones presents an intergenerational and international grouping of artists whose work encompasses painting, performance, photography, sculpture, textile, collage, video, and more. Artists featured in the exhibition include: Laura Aguilar, Vani Aguilar, Juan Arango Palacios, Amina Cruz, Martine Gutierrez, Jesús Hilario-Reyes, Xandra Ibarra, Teresa Margolles, Xelestial Moreno-Luz, Andres Payan Estrada, Guadalupe Rosales, Joey Terrill, and Isa Ybarra.  

Kicking off the exhibition’s events will be the Members’ Sneak Peek on Thursday, September 17. All day during regular hours from 11AM-7PM, MCASD Members will have the opportunity to step behind the curtain and see Visiones Nocturnas before the general public.  

 The following day, on Friday, September 18 from 6-9PM, the public will be invited to a Preview Party with Members receiving a discount on tickets. More details about the event to be shared soon.  

The San Diego and broader community will then be invited to attend the exhibition’s Free Public Opening on Saturday, September 19 from 11AM-7PM.   

Visiones Nocturnas is curated by MCASD Associate Curator Amy Crum and will be on view through January 10, 2027.

Works included in Visiones probe the physical trappings of these environments—dance clubs, dive bars, block parties, backyards and bathhouses—for their capacity to generate sites of queer belonging, transcendence, and resilience. Visiones Nocturnas, or night visions, borrows its title from the work of Andres Payan Estrada, whose immersive installation commemorates a decade-long photographic research project examining ephemeral facets of queer nightlife along the U.S./Mexico border. Highlighting Latina/o/e and Latin American artists from the 1990s to today, this show features works by Laura Aguilar, Martine Gutierrez, Guadalupe Rosales, Joey Terrill and others. This intergenerational presentation encompasses painting, performance, photography, sculpture, textile, collage, video, and more.
