Rap on Border: A Public Conversation

Rap on Border: A Public Conversation is the opening event for  the exhibition In a Close(d) Relationship, on view in MCASD's galleries at 1001 Kettner Blvd. from January 25 through April 8, 2018.

Participants from Transnational Seminar I, an interdisciplinary effort between students of Southwestern College, Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, Tijuana (UABC), and University of California San Diego, will hold a conversation about race, gender, sexuality, and life in general as residents of the borderlands. They will share how their perspectives changed (or did not) after spending 15 weeks as part of a nomadic Art & Ethnography experiment, crisscrossing the U.S./Mexico border, working together to create public interventions and conduct local interviews.

Join the discussion to learn more about the acquired knowledge, research, and active millennial participation culminating in Collective Magpie's exhibition, In a Close(d) Relationship.

The conversation will be moderated by K. Wayne Yang.

In a Close(d) Relationship features work produced in two experimental seminar classes designed and conducted by Collective Magpie with local college students.

Who Designs Your Race?, a work from the exhibition on 1001 Kettner Blvd.’s façade, presents the results of the student administered survey about race in the form of advertising sign painting. The use of the Uncle Sam figure is a reinterpretation of historic U.S. propaganda, used in the work as an urgent suggestion of the U.S. government collection of information about race. Instead of asking you to check the box and define your race, what if Uncle Sam asked you to reflect upon the question of who defines your race? In a time where the topic of race is a focus of national politics and news, with a lens held up to the borderlands, can we utilize this moment to personally explore ideas of race.
