MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART SAN DIEGO ANNOUNCES SPRING AND SUMMER PROGRAMS
San Diego, CA—The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) will present a variety of public programs this spring and summer designed to engage, educate, and inspire. Highlights include the continuation of Downtown at Sundown on the third Thursday of every month at MCASD Downtown; the return of Shore Thing, a summertime favorite at MCASD La Jolla; the fifth annual “25 and Under Art Contest,” calling all young artists to submit original work for the chance to win $500 in Blick Art Material supplies; another exciting iteration of The Opening Night on June 4; and MCASD’s Summer C.A.M.P., which invites 5 to 17-year-olds to explore contemporary art alongside local artists.

Visual and performing arts converge at MCASD Downtown’s after-hours offering Downtown at Sundown. On the third Thursday of every month from 5 to 8 PM, enjoy free Museum admission, exhibition tours, music by The Roots Factory Art Collective, free entry at San Diego State University Downtown Gallery, drink specials at Stone Brewing Company and The Flight Path Wine Bar & Bistro, The Book Truck, a food truck, and more! This program is made possible through a partnership with San Diego State University Downtown Gallery and the Downtown San Diego Partnership.

- SDSU Downtown Gallery will host performances by the ensemble SWARMIUS and students in the SDSU Composition Laboratory who were directly inspired by the current exhibition, Cathedrals: Jeff Ray.
- Villa Musica will perform at 6:15 and 7:17 PM. Villa Musica is a local community-oriented music education organization that teaches people of all ages about music, and stages performances for all to enjoy.

Extended School Partnership Showcases
Through the Museum’s Extended School Partnership (ESP) program, MCASD’s Education Department works directly with middle and high schools throughout San Diego County to empower teachers to use the Museum as an extension of their classroom. MCASD Gallery Educators work with classroom teachers to incorporate the Museum’s current exhibitions into their curriculum, tailoring lesson plans to complement the class’s given subject. The program includes visits to the Museum and culminates in an event where students showcase their original artworks created in response to what they’ve learned. The public is invited to join these students, along with their families and teachers, in celebrating their work at the following showcase events. All ESP Showcases are on Free Third Thursday and are free for the public to attend.

Aperture Home Tour with Architect Wallace Cunningham

This event is open to MCASD Circle Members only. Join architect Wallace Cunningham for a reception and tour at the home of MCASD Circle Members Marie Tartar and Steve Eilenberg. The Aperture home is built on a bluff above San Elijo Lagoon in Cardiff by the Sea. The plan, a series of acute triangles radiating about a common point, is expressed in elevation by a roof of eight spiraling triangles likened to the aperture of a camera lens. Its profile changes from every angle and captures the sweeping panoramic views of the lagoon and ocean.
The 25 and Under Art Contest

Now in its fifth year, this annual contest celebrates the Museum's year-round initiative to offer free admission to all visitors 25 and younger, thanks to Qualcomm Foundation. Artists 25 and younger are invited to submit original artworks to be considered for the Showcase. This year’s theme is “home,” calling all young artists to find inspiration in the places they call, or have called, home. Contestants are encouraged to visit MCASD’s galleries for inspiration. Currently on view at MCASD Downtown, the exhibition Do Ho Suh utilizes fabric sculptures and innovative drawings to explore issues of home, identity, and personal space. Contestant should visit www.mcasd.org/2016contest to submit an image of their work. A panel of judges will determine the top 25 finalists, whose work will be featured in a Showcase at the Museum on Saturday, June 4. The public is invited to vote on their favorite work at the Showcase. Four winners will be selected in two categories: Curator's Choice and People's Choice. This year's grand prize winner will take home a $500 gift certificate to Blick Art Materials, a year-long MCASD Membership, and a curator-led tour of the exhibition of their choice.
Art Auction 2016

Art Auction 2016 will feature live and silent auctions of artwork selected by MCASD’s curators, including paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by emerging and internationally recognized artists. MCASD will use a mobile bidding system that allows participants to bid remotely from around the world. Bidding will begin up to a week before the auction. Gold Circle ticket holders will be treated to an exclusive first look preview reception on May 11, as well as a limited edition paddle designed by artist Mel Bochner. Join local art enthusiasts at The Opening Night as we celebrate Holdings: Selections from MCASD’s Collection. This summer presentation of the Museum’s permanent collection will highlight the strength of the Museum’s holdings, including Minimalist and Pop works of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as more recent acquisitions. Come celebrate with us and enjoy in-depth tours on the hour, music, cocktails, and great conversation. The Opening Night is free for Members and $10 for non-members.

This annual event is open to the Museum’s Collectors Circle group, who will view and vote on works of art—selected by the David C. Copley Director and CEO, Hugh M. Summer C.A.M.P. (Contemporary Art, Media & Process) invites 5 to 17-year-olds to explore contemporary art through a series of week-long art making workshops designed to encourage artistic expression, art appreciation, and imagination. Led by local artist Michael Ano, C.A.M.P.ers will discover out-of-the-ordinary materials and learn about artists’ processes as they discuss artwork in the Museum’s La Jolla galleries and Edwards Sculpture Garden. Each week-long C.A.M.P. session culminates with a showcase and celebration of the C.A.M.P.ers’ artwork.

Celebrate the work of more than 75 active duty armed forces members who engaged in a series of weekly art classes and visits to the Museum to produce original works of art as a means of coping with the effects of combat-related stress. Join us as they share their stories and the impact this program has had on their lives. These works will be on display at MCASD La Jolla as part of the exhibition ArtOASIS from July 29 through September 4.
